forecast today. by midday 74 degrees. you will have to deal with some winds today. they will be pushing in from the northwest and we'll get a little bit gusty by this afternoon picking up to at least 25 miles per hour. so be prepared for that. but overall, we are not doing too badly and we're talking a high today of 78 degrees. back to you. our big story this morning, you couldn't have scripted it any better for robert griffin iii. the 21-year-old lived up to the hype and threw for two touchdowns and ran for 42 yards. >> fellow rookie alfred morris led the ground attack with two touchdowns. the redskins won 40- 32. >> we could have scored a few more points but nothing is ever perfect. so you know there were some passes i wish i had back. there are some plays i wish i had back, you know, falling on a keeper hitting the runningback or fumbling on the red zone when we had a open guy

is already being prepared for inauguration day. fox 5's melanie alnwick has the latest on the campaign trail live from capitol hill. >> reporter: good morning. yes, the west terrace of the capital will be closed starting today for the workers to begin to install the stands that we are going to see all over the place here for inauguration day 2013. hard to believe that they have to get ready this far in advance but it will be upon us before we know it. but who is sworn in on january 21st will depend on what happens between now and november. and it does appear that president obama is getting a small bump in the polls. here's a look at the numbers. the latest gallup poll of registered voters showing president obama with a 5-point lead, 49-44% just outside the margin of error. the president hit florida sunday. 29 delegates up for grabs there. real clear politics shows mr. obama with a slight lead although the state is still classified as a toss-up. the president's campaign appearances in the sunshine

state trying to turn attention away from jobs and the economy towards medicare. governor romney took sunday off attending church and doing some debate prep but he still managed to make news clarifying his position on healthcare in a pretaped interview. it's the pocketbook issues that many voters will be paying attention to. >> i will never turned medicare into a voucher. >> yeah! >> we won't do that. they want to give the money back to the insurance companies, put them in charge of medicare. >> i'm not getting rid of all healthcare reform. of course there are a number of things that i like in the healthcare reform that i'm going to put in place, one is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage, two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like. i also want individuals to be able to buy insurance, health insurance, on their own as opposed to only being able to get it on a tax advantaged basis through their company. >> reporter: mitt romney is

campaigning in ohio today, focusing on jobs and the economy. these next 60 days are really going to fly by, the date a lot of people are circling on their calendars, october 3rd the date for the first presidential debate. >> melanie, thank you very much. meanwhile, tragedy strikes the campaign trail after a motorcycle officer escorting the president's motorcade to an event is struck by a vehicle and dies. the 55-year-old officer from the city of jupiter was preparing to shut down interstate 95 in west palm beach yesterday when he was hit by a pickup truck. white house press secretary jay carney says president obama's thoughts and prayers are with the officer's family. the victim was a 20-year veteran of the jupiter police force. the kids are back in school. summer is wrapping up and congress is returning after a five-week vacation. lawmakers have a lot of unfinished business, too, including budget deadlines. but the fall session is shorter than usual. and with elections looming in november, congress is expected to put off big issues like

spending cuts and taxes. making headlines this morning, teachers in chicago have gone on strike for the first time in 25 years. contract talks stalled once again late last night. as a result, the chicago teachers union says its 26,000 members will not show up for work today. that means nearly 400,000 students won't have classes. the two sides are haggling over issues like pay raises, benefits and job security. mayor rahm emanuel is furious. he says that the strike is unnecessary because negotiations are not that far apart. there's been a lot of backlash for his book "no easy day" but now the author of that book is speaking out for the first time. >> wisdom martin is back with a look at what the former navy seal has to say about the raid that killed osama bin laden. >> reporter: he has appeared on "60 minutes" last night to discuss his story and historic

mission. the retired navy seal is identified as matt bissonnette and he wrote the book under a pseudonym. the goes by the name mark owen, the former navy seal turned author who wrote "no easy day" a firsthand account of the u.s. military raid that killed osama bin laden. >> that's been lots of build-up because no one read book in advance and it's something we have never seen before where a navy seal speaks about an operation. >> reporter: he is under heavy scrutiny and his life is threatened. now he is speaking out for the first time of the he sat down with "60 minutes" but for security reasons, both his appearance and his voice were altered. >> this operation was one of the most significant operations in u.s. history. and it's something that i believe deserves to be told right. and deserves to go in a book and stand for itself. >> reporter: but not everyone agrees. >> the american public doesn't need to know what happened exactly in that building. >> reporter: the pentagon has gone as far as threatening legal action against owen for an alleged violation of

the pentagon and vice president joe biden will speak at the united flight 93 memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania. in new york city for the first time, no politicians have been invited to the ceremony at ground zero. that's in part because of tensions between new york and new jersey lawmakers over who is responsible for costs of the yet-to-open 9/11 museum. as the nation prepares to remember those lives lost, we are also remembering the first responders who got sick after sifting through the toxic rubble. 11 years later the federal government may finally recognize that people who worked or lived near the world trade center after 9/11 got cancer as a result. according to "new york times," an announcement acknowledging this link could be made any day now. back to the presidential campaign. the lighter side of life on the trail, president obama's feeling the love of supporters in florida. >> literally. then thousands a is even coming

from an -- this enthusiasm is coming from an unlikely source. he was so excited to meet the president that he gave him a bear hug. the registered republican plans to vote for president obama for a second time in november. he says he just feels comfortable with the president. we want to mention that he says he did get approval from the secret service to give that bear hug. >> that's good. it wasn't a hug but vice president joe biden got to cuddle up with some bikers during a campaign visit to ohio this past weekend. the vice president stopped by a diner on his way to give a speech and ended up crawling over a female member of the group and told her, i know who runs the show even pulled her up a chair in front of himself. but from the looks of it, her friends were a little suspicious. >> a little snuggle snuggle there with the vice president. >> not really sure what was going on there. >> weird.

as a result of the jet stream seeing this cooler influx of air that's settling in. so for us we are actually headed to the 70s today. the upper 70s pretty much everywhere. so you will see the sunshine and it will be drier as well as cooler than over the course of the past week or so. so pretty cool night tonight and then for tomorrow, i mean, for this afternoon, i should say, no shortage of sunshine, ridge of high pressure is going to rule all along the mid- atlantic and into the east. that's going to hold us through into most of the week. for today 78 degrees then. winds will be gusting from the northwest at 25 miles an hour so be prepared for that. and if you take a look at tonight, clear skies and light winds, 55 degrees. the winds will start to diminish somewhat only from the north at 5 to 10. however, in the western suburbs, in the northwest, i really anticipate the temperatures will actually probably be in the low 50s, anywhere from about 50 to 53 degrees. here's a look at your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast. sunshine right across the board. we see a cloud or two heading into the weekend and that's because we have a cold front

[ laughter ] >> we have to knock him for something. >> here's the thing. he didn't do anything wrong on the field. i think it's a-plus all around. he tripped one time but basically, threw the ball tremendously well, great decisions. there were times when we thought he would run and he still looked down field and completed passes. amazing performance. >> when he tripped on the ball, covered it up, wasn't fumbling, didn't pull a rex grossman, he had ball security throughout that game which is great for the redskins. >> and he stood tall in the pocket. that throw to garcon, a lot of people think quarterbacks will run out of the pocket. he stood tall and delivered the pass. they didn't have a reception like that all last season. there was a lot of yards after the catch but rg iii took a major hit on that throw. really impressive. >> you mentioned his decision- making. i said earlier, i'm very impressed by his poise staying in the pocket and taking the

hits and everything but also the decision-making, because if there is anywhere where you think there will be some problems for a rookie, it's making decisions, making wrong decisions and throwing interceptions. >> he never threw the ball up for grabs which is something that the previous quarterbacks always did. >> right. he seemed to know where the linebackers were. he had a grasp of the offense. there was just no rookie jitters that you would expect. really it's a new era. i think we can look forward to performances like this in the future. >> the analysts always talk about the game speeding up in the regular season versus the preseason? it doesn't look like it sped up for him. looked like it slowed down so he was able to make the quick decisions. >> shanahan didn't really show much in the preseason. and you can talk about the game speeding up in general for rookie quarterbacks but that defense, they are not used to guys like rg iii. he was able to slide out of the pocket sometimes and when he takes off, he is faster than everybody else. >> one thing, too, jason you talked about it a couple of hours ago, we are not really talk about the redskins defense

today. maybe we should too. because they played out of their minds again only giving up essentially 24 points, 32, two-point conversion and really the defense, which was much maligned coming in especially the back four, stepped up and confused drew brees. i was surprised by this. >> when you can hold drew brees it 50% completion on his passes, you have done an amazing job as defense. kudos for that. >> i think they batted down four balls too. they had them out of rhythm. the dbs played great. cedric griffin played out of his mind. so really overall other than the blocked punt, that was blais cloudy the only blemish on the -- that was basically the only blemish on the team. >> the saints committed 12 penalties, only ran the ball 10 times, they looked out of sync. not having sean payton was a

noticing some plaque build-up on fido lately or some really bad breath? it might be time to have your dog's teeth cleaned. >> there are some pros and cons to taking your dog to the vet for the procedure or you can try doing it yourself, which could save you a lot of money. might be hard to do, though. annie hugh has more on this. >> hey, tony and sarra . thank you very much. it could save you money but also save your dog's life. we'll explain in a bit. but first i want to introduce our guess, can sandra reed with dogma in arlington a pet stylist specialist over there. good morning. >> good morning. >> you brought molly who is a loyal client of yours. she looks artificial. but she is real and breathing. [ laughter ] >> so i have to admit, you know, i have had dogs all my life and i clip their nails, sometimes a little grooming myself but never thought to clean their teeth myself until now because my yorkie has a condition where his heart is

leaking so he can't be put under anesthesia. what alternatives can people do at home? >> well, at home in between your vet dental visits, you can actually do a couple of things. just like we brush our teeth and mouthwash, twice a day, in between our doctor visits, the dogs need the same thing. so there's a couple of things we have like a finger toothbrush that we can use, you know, if you can see how clean molly's teeth are. >> great teeth. >> she has never one time had a procedure to get her teeth cleaned and this is why. we have products such as water additives and a toothbrushless toothpaste so all you do is just dab it in their mouth. >> so explain this. this is pretty neat. this one doesn't require any hands on, right? >> this is the simplest

solution and i love it and all of my clients love it. you just take the cap off, pour a little capful of the solution into the water bowl. and they drink it. >> fresh breath instantly. >> it's minty and it does wonders. >> okay. these are things i have seen before, the bully sticks and the bones to kind of rub against their teeth for the plaque. those things all help but you're saying something like you this put on a toothbrush here. now, my dog is 10 and he isn't used to me touching close up to his mouth. what are your tips or advice for dogs like that? >> well, with your dog being 10 and it's probably first time being introduced to teeth brushing, right -- >> by me, right. >> by you. well, one thing you have to be concerned about if you are doing home maintenance and the teeth brushing, if you see any real excess build-up, red inflamed gums, you're going to have to go see your vet for

that initially. however, you know, in your case, he can't go and get the anesthesia and go through the procedure. you can still use things such as these chews to help out. we have sprays. these are the bully sticks that we have. just any kind of dental chew. elk antlers. you know, anything is better than nothing at that point. >> right. and explain how important is it, really, to take your dog's teeth seriously. i know some people neglect it for many reasons, the cost first of all, it could cost up to $200 or but how really important is it? >> well, it is very important because what causes the periodontal disease is the bacteria build-up in the mouth. and if you let that go on too long, not only are you going to have gingivitis, the excess plaque build-up, that bacteria

[ laughter ] >> reporter: the things we do for our jobs, right? >> that's right. >> reporter: a tomato never looked so good. leslie is the marketing and media relations manager at brookside on this gorgeous monday morning. >> it is gorgeous. >> reporter: and you guys are gearing up for a big thing come saturday which is the super fun day here. tell me about it. >> it's our annual children's day and this year it's eat like a rainbow which is why i'm wearing this lovely tomato costume. we are part of the michelle obama national initiative, let's move and groove. we're going to have kids here

learning about healthy eating choices, keeping physically fit, and we'll have a 16-minute activity circuit to participate in, something like what the kids are doing behind me. >> reporter: so insert here, parents, bring your kids to be worn out while they're here and learn things. >> there will be planting, face- painting, scavenger hunts. ities. >> a fun event, free to the community, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this saturday and we hope the kids will come out and have fun. >> reporter: talk about eating like a rainbow and how as parents we can go about doing that. >> actually our entertainment that day is national songwriter by the name of jay mankita and his album is called eat like a rainbow, featuring the usda's team nutrition and jay drives around in a veggie voyager that is powered by recycled

vegetable oil. so all of his songs talk about healthy eating and the need to eat more fruits and vegetables. so that's part of what our theme here at the gardens has been. >> reporter: the thing i like is sometimes when, you know, they give us a recommendation of how many serves we need to have and it's kind of hard to keep it straight but if you just look on your plate and you see blue, red, green, you need to mix it up. that makes it interesting. we have been here also it morning talk about the butterflies and this is the last week for that so i'm sure people can get in on that saturday, as well. >> yes, they can. >> has that been successful this summer. it's been wildly successful despite all the heat and humidity and the power outages we had earlier this summer. it's been great. >> reporter: that would be tough on the butterflies with the power outage. no heat and humidity this morning. it's gorgeous. when people come to brookside, what's the best to make the most of the property? there's a lot here. >> we have 50 acres here at brookside gardens, so what they

should really do is start at the visitors center. we'll give them a passport or map that looks like this. and then they will have a whole circuit that they can go by and stop at each station, get their passport stamped, and they will be learning something at each station and getting some gifts and little prizes. >> reporter: do you find that sometimes this is still a little bit of a hidden gem, people don't always realize that brookside is here? >> it is. that means i need to do a better job. >> reporter: well said from the marketing director, right? let's time, tomato this time, you could always put on the banana costume. i want to bring the kids over. it's not every day you come to play on tv. that's cool. so here's my question for you guys before you go. you spent a little time here at brookside gardens. can you tell me your favorite thing? >> the flowers. >> reporter: what do you like about the flowers? >> they're colorful. >> reporter: they are beautiful. >> butterflies. >> reporter: the butterflies. did you have a favorite
